lightblueline 3rd local meeting

The lightblueline action in Santa Barbara held its 3rd local meeting on Friday, August 25, at the University Club.

We had a several new painters: David Lea from UCSB, Marty Blum, mayor of Santa Barbara, and Darren Hardy from the Bren School. WELCOME!

Bruce gave a short Keynote presentation using slides from James Hansen's recent discussion with the National Academy of Science in DC.

One of the slides from Hansen's talk used data collected at UCSB by...David Lea! So David was able to tell us how the paleoclimate picture informs the current situation.

The action collaborative wrestled with a couple topics, including the date for the kickoff event, and the public story about "Seven Meters."

We are looking to work with a new Climate Change initiative at UCSB and schedule our kickoff event when some heavy-hitting climate scientists are in town (MORE NEWS LATER).

The Mayor was very interested in the planned action, and noted that the city's street staff should be brought into the loop once the plans become more firm.

David and Darren both brought up the question of how we would explain the choice of SEVEN METERS. And Rosanne made the point that Seven Meters (or 20 feet) is what happens should Greenland's ice melt. Recent climate models puts Greenland at risk over time, and recent observations make the time frame much more uncertain.

We are painting the lightblueline to show what would happen when/if all of the ice on Greenland melts. We are doing this to bring awareness to the public that they need to get active to STOP Greenland from melting in the near term (100-1000 years).

We will be meeting again on FRIDAY, Sept. 8 at 2 pm at the University Club.
